Blood tests via cellphone

Jun 3, 2005, 11:33 AM ET by Peter Rojas

Cellphone blood test

This may officially be taking this whole cellphones-as-health-diagnostic-tools thing a little too far: researchers in Sweden have developed a way to perform basic blood tests with a cellphone. The whole set up consists of a little disposable microfluidic sensor that connects to a cellphone. The sensor, which is powered by your cellphone’s battery, displays results as different light signals on a chip; you’re then supposed to photograph the chip with the camera on your phone (see how it all ties together?) and then send the pic off to a doctor or lab for analysis. Anyway, besides freaking out anyone who doesn’t like blood, the sensor should eventually be able to check for any “biomarker for which there is an existing antibody.”
